Beautiful football, a Van and twin terrors!!

Japan was devastated by a terrible earthquake and tsunami on Friday and I hope we are all doing all we can to support, be it through prayer, physical or financial aid during their time of need. May God be with them all in this terrible time.

A friend of mine recently wrote a Facebook status saying he had given up Arsenal for lent!! It explains the frustration Arsenal fans must feel. I'm sure Arsenal fans are sick of defending their trophy-less run to opposing fans.

And then there was one!! 13 days ago, Arsene Wenger confidently contemplated a challenge for four trophies as his most emphatic answer to charges that Arsenal had forgotten how to win silverware. It seems "beautiful football" has once again forgotten the main goal in football and sport as a whole, WINNING!! Winning games which leads to winning titles, trophies and awards. Beauty as some would say, is only skin deep.

Over the last 6 years, we have been  pummeled with the phrase "beautiful football" as the reason and excuse why Arsenal were not winning silverware. It seemed Arsene Wenger, Arsenal FC and their fans believed they were better than all other teams because even though they were not winning silverware, their team was more technically skilled and gifted,  played football that was eye pleasing and overall they were more team oriented. This was all good UNTIL Barcelona played the same better beautiful football on their way to a 6 trophy haul in 2009.

                                   Beautiful football with rewards!!

Everyone knows what needs to be done for the club, Arsenal, to improve and get past their trophy drought. Spend. Spend big, spend wise and spend on big game players. Chelsea and Liverpool did in January and look how David Luiz and Suarez have helped strengthen both teams respectively. Both of them have shone and added quality and vibrance to squads that were in limbo.

The weekend was awesome. Manchester United beat  Arsenal thanks to a man of the match performance by Edwin van der Sar who was a wall that could not be penetrated no matter how hard Arsenal tried. United's unfamiliar line which included 7 defenders and 3 offensive players had the da Silva twins playing right and left wing. Their speed, telepathy and spring of youth helped destroy Arsenal's hopes of ending a trophy drought thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Fabio da Sivla.

The FA Cup game of the weekend (which most of you including me probably did not watch) had to be the 5 goal thriller which saw Bolton eclipse Carling Cup winners Birmingham and set a up a date with Stoke City in the semi-finals whilst its derby day once again as United face their noisy neighbours Manchester City.

The da Silva twins proved 2 much for Arsenal who couldn't handle Double the trouble

Europe-wide the league title races have tightened up.In Italy, draws for both Milan teams saw AC Milan's lead cut down to 5 points while Borussia Dortmund's lead in the Bundesliga was cut down to 9 points after a loss to Hoffenheim in a thriller of match despite the 1-0 scoreline. Bayern Munich THUMPED Hamburg 6-0 whilst Leverkusen beat Mainz by a single goal and continued to solidify the number two spot and Champions League qualification. In Spain another brace by on fire striker Benzema saw Real Madrid cut Barca's lead down to 5 points thanks to  a Barcelona draw. The end of season matches are going to tense, exciting and crucial in all the above mentioned leagues.

In the NBA, The Golden State Warriors came back from 21 points down to stun the Orlando Magic 123-120 in overtime Friday night in a wild game that set a new record for most combined 3-pointers made.. The Boston Celtics regained their winning ways beating the Bucks after back to back losses whilst the Miami Heat continued their resurgence after a dip in form. The Spurs are still sizzling beating the Rockets to extend their record to an amazing 54-12.

In the Vodacom Super Rugby  I was able to watch a comeback of sort as the Hurricanes returned from missing three weeks to beat the Chiefs 29-26. The Lions ended their 17-match winless streak in Super Rugby with a 25-20 victory over the Toyota Cheetahs whilst the Sharks re-wrote the record books setting a new South African milestone for the most number of victories (24) over Australian opposition when they ran in the 34-32 defeat of the Rebels  in Melbourne. Elsewhere the Stormers handed the Highlanders their first defeat of the season.

If you want to know about the cricket World Cup, how about watching it for yourself rather than following Charlie Sheen's shenanigans hey!!! Go Zimbabwe!! Lets hope the lads can save face and pull a shocker against Pakistan.
